Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa Projected to Break The Bank on New Extension
Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins could look to make Tua Tagovailoa one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL on a long-term extension.

General manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins continue to build around Tagovailoa, including dropping veteran Odell Beckham Jr. into one of the most electrifying and dynamic receiving corps in the league.

But, the biggest commitment possible to Tagovailoa could be coming, via a long-term extension for the NFL’s reigning leading passer.

What Might a Tua Tagovailoa Contract Extension Look Like for Miami Dolphins?

Tagovailoa and the Dolphins unquestionably came up short, after losing to the Buffalo Bills and losing homefield advantage prior to bowing out in the AFC Wild Card round in Kansas City against the Chiefs.

However, Tagovailoa is coming off a 4,624-yard 2023 campaign with 29 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, opening the door to a possible long-term deal.

Spotrac projects Tagovailoa could command a deal worth upwards of $49.6 million over four seasons, as the NFL’s fourth-highest paid quarterback.

“Tua is entering his 5th season in Miami,” Michael Ginnetti writes for Spotrac. “Set to earn a fully guaranteed $23.17M option salary for the upcoming season. He put together his best season to date last year by a country mile, placing him on a 4 year, $198M extension valuation. It seems highly unlikely that the Dolphins get a signature on anything less than $50M per year however.”

ESPN reports that talks between Tagovailoa and the Dolphins have already begun on a potential new deal. Miami has built one of the league’s most explosive offenses around Tagovailoa, and now might be prepared to make him one of the highest-paid players at the most position in sports.
